Both of those things come from the same source. What you have to do is at all times pay careful attention to all that is around you. It is easy to get into a routine and miss what is going on because it all seems so familiar. Craftsmanship is a matter of learning what the materials want to do. Stories are made in the telling, but the telling is in the remembering and in the forgetting of what happened. Yurts are good for remembering. Remembering your days, your nights, what you dream. The smoke hole seems to be a focus. You can look at the sky, without seeing any of the land, but you see the smoke going up and the sparks mixing with the stars.

wow.. first off, that sounds like some amazing craftsmanship, and second, i want to be able to tell stories like that!! XD

The curved rafters are trickey. I helped a friend build a Caspian Region yurt years ago. We went down the mountains to about 2000' elevation where the willows were still a little soft to gather poles. Back home, I lived in the interrior then, boiled water to melt places in the ground to drive stakes for bending the poles. When the steaks were forzen firmly in place I peeled the bark from the poles and bent them between the steaks. I let the poles dry in the snow for a month or so, and when I removed them they held their shape beautifully, and the tails could be lashed to the lattice to help keep them in place. I was a lot of work though, and made it difficult to change the size of the yurt, without making new poles, which we eventually did. I had some very good times in that tent though. I remember watching the notthern lights through the smoke hole one night when it was too cold to go outside, and we huddled by the fire.

a little one, just ten feet in diameter. it's the Mongolian style, i think, without the curved roof slats.
